Addresses #84

If this looks correct, I'm down to PR these same changes to all the flavors. Just lemme know what'd be helpful!

This looks good 👍. Don't worry about the flavors yet. We wont end-up making separate PRs to them— we will merge the base branch up into them and resolve conflicts (which should be minor, just around deps ordering).
