Found a workaround. This and other issues (multiplayer level text missing, chat text missing) are from it looking for a default windows font and not finding it.

Get the font "Segoe UI" and add it to the proton font directory (steamapps/compatdata/620980/pfx/drive_c/windows/Fonts)
