While I was hacking around with building and booting sd-card images and other USB drives I noticed that sometimes it helped to use the Boot Manager option of the BIOS and the reset feature that was listed. This seemed to cause the bios to re-scan for boot devices such that it would discover the sd-card or the USB drive and the drive partitions on it.
I've managed to get ubuntu, centos7, and coreOS booting on a different USB drive, and from sd-card. To do this find the bare-metal install instructions for the linux distro you want to spin. In my case I did not want to blast away the DC2 supplied USB drive image since I'm still hacking around and often landing in a non-bootable state.
I've still got lots of homework to do to learn how the BIOS works and how linux system drives are imaged and booted.
Right now I have the DC2 running centos7 and RedHat Openshift (kubernetes/docker) --- lots of fun.
Some of the MinnowBoards are temperamental and don't always recognize the USB devices. We found that with a number of boards. We did find that once it was up and running, it was ok. I would guess that the USB drive and keyboard are detected, or neither are detected.
Did you check if the USB drive is ok and that it will mount in another device? We did have one USB that was DOA. If so, we can get you a new USB.
If the USB drive is ok, then I would try restarting a few times to see if it starts to behave. If not, let's get you a new MinnowBoard.

I've dropped a Samsung m.2 SSD into my silver jaw lure & did a plain install of Ubuntu 16.04 server and have had no issues since.
Attempts at getting other devices to recognize the supplied USB stick - my windows pc & mac are both convinced there's nothing there (not even something that I can format)
@thepatrick sorry your drive was DOA. We can send you a replacement.
After getting my MinnowBoard out of the container, and removing the USB stick I can boot to the UEFI/BIOS screen. However... when I reattach the USB stick the keyboard stops working inside the UEFI/BIOS interface. As soon as I disconnect it works again.
Now when I boot (with the USB stick attached) it gets through the memory check and then very quickly flashes Boot failed, before taking me to a UEFI interactive shell.
Do I have a faulty USB stick?
Where is the image that these drives are flashed with so I can re-flash it / flash another drive to further debug this?
