[TalkBack] Support entering of Germanumlauts and other special characters #270

Open GoogleCodeExporter opened 9 years ago

GoogleCodeExporter commented 9 years ago
What steps will reproduce the problem?
1 In Jelly Bean, Settings, Languages and Input, Keyboard, add another keyboard
language such as German.
2. Switch to that keyboard layout.
3. A way to enter umlauts is not possible. Sighted users tap and hold the u
letter to get a selection of special characters such as ü, ú etc. TalkBack
users cannot accomplish that.

What is the expected output? What do you see instead? There is no way to tap
and hold a key. As soon as the finger is lifted, the letter is entered. There
must be a way to turn the letter into "tap and hold" mode. In iOS, this is done
by tapping the screen with a second finger while touching one of those keys,
then lifting the finger to double-tap and hold to get the selection.

What version of the product are you using? On what operating system? TalkBack
3.3.0 on Jelly Bean 4.2.2. Jelly Bean is the first Android version that works
with the stock keyboard and does not require the Eyes-Free keyboard.

Please provide any additional information below.

Unfortunatelly this is not specific to german. It applies to most other
languages besides english including spanish, french, italian, and also slavic
languages such as slovak, czech, polish,. These are the languages where I know
the alphabet. I am afraid there are many more languages where this is
applicable thus if this can be addressed as soon as possible many many many
people would get a chance to become more productive. Now the only workaround to
type accented letters is by relying on auto correction what is not omniscient
unfortunatelly.Enter your comments

The priority on this issue should be high. Not having accents and other special
characters is like not having a complete alphabet as these characters affect
meaning in languages that use them. Autocorrect catches most problems, but it
misses a significant number (e.g., in Spanish words like "continúo,"
"continuo," and "continuó"). I don't feel that I can conduct work related
communication on my device until this issue is fixed.
