he%20married%20mick%20jagger%20in%201971.%20on%20christmas%20eve%20in%201972,%20she%20heard%20on%20the%20news%20that%20there%20had%20been%20a%20devastating%20earthquake%20in%20managua,%20nicaragua.%20the%20earthquake%20killed%2010,000%20people,%20injuring%2020,000%20and%20leaving%20approximately%20200,000%20homeless.%20it%20reached%206.5%20on%20the%20richter%20scale%20and%20sparked%20huge%20fires.%20she%20tried%20to%20contact%20her%20parents%20and%20when%20she%20couldn't%20reach%20them,%20she%20flew%20to%20nicaragua%20with%20mick%20jagger%20the%20following%20day.%20they%20stopped%20in%20jamaica%20to%20pick%20up%20a%20shipment%20of%20medicine%20which%20they%20took%20in%20a%20small%20charter%20plane%20to%20managua.%20when%20they%20landed,%20they%20found%20that%20the%20airport%20was%20partially%20destroyed%20and%20shut-down.%20ms%20jagger%20was%20anxious%20to%20find%20her%20parents.%20she%20decided%20to%20drive%20through%20the%20burning%20city%20to%20look%20for%20them.%20%e2%80%9c%e2%80%98i%20will%20never%20forget%20the%20stench%20of%20the%20charred%20bodies,%20when%20i%20drove%20through%20the%20rubble%20of%20managua,%e2%80%9d%20ms.%20jagger%20has%20said.%20her%20parents%20homes%20were%20destroyed%20and%20she%20couldn't%20find%20them.%20in%20desperation,%20she%20put%20out%20an%20announcement%20on%20the%20radio%20and%20fortunately,%20she%20found%20her%20parents%20unharmed%20three%20days%20later%20in%20the%20city%20of%20leon.%20\\n\\nms%20jagger%20learned%20that%20aid%20from%20the%20u.s.%20and%20elsewhere%20was%20being%20misappropriated%20by%20the%20somoza%20regime:%20these%20ruthless%20acts%20of%20pillage%20eventually%20fuelled%20the%20sandinista%20revolution%20and%20motivated%20her%20to%20fight%20repression,%20corruption%20and%20injustice.%20after%20her%20visit%20to%20nicaragua,%20bianca%20jagger%20urged%20mick%20jagger%20and%20the%20rolling%20stones%20to%20do%20a%20relief%20concert.%20in%201993%20they%20performed%20in%20l.a.%20to%20raise%20funds%20for%20the%20victims%20of%20the%20earthquake,%20one%20of%20the%20first%20relief%20concerts.\\n\\nin%20the%20spring%20of%201979%20bianca%20jagger%20joined%20forces%20with%20the%20british%20red%20cross%20to%20raise%20funds%20for%20the%20victims%20of%20the%20conflict%20in%20nicaragua;%20she%20then%20flew%20to%20her%20homeland%20to%20join%20the%20international%20red%20cross%20to%20help%20on%20the%20ground.%201979,%20the%20year%20of%20her%20divorce,%20coincided%20with%20the%20fall%20of%20the%20somoza%20dictator.\\n\\nin%201981%20bianca%20jagger%20travelled%20to%20honduras%20on%20a%20us%20congressional%20fact-finding%20mission,%20visiting%20a%20un%20refugee%20camp,%2020%20km%20from%20the%20border%20of%20el%20salvador.%20during%20her%20visit%20to%20the%20camp%20an%20armed%20death%20squad%20crossed%20the%20border%20from%20el%20salvador,%20with%20the%20honduran%20army%e2%80%99s%20blessing,%20entered%20the%20camp%20and%20rounded%20up%20about%20forty%20refugees%20to%20take%20them%20back%20to%20el%20salvador.%20ms.%20jagger,%20the%20delegation%20and%20the%20relief%20workers%20feared%20that%20the%20death%20squads%20were%20going%20to%20kill%20the%20hostages%20once%20they%20arrived%20in%20salvadorian%20territory.%20armed%20only%20with%20cameras,%20they%20followed%20the%20death%20squad%20and%20hostages%20for%20approximately%20half%20an%20hour.%20finally,%20they%20came%20within%20earshot.%20the%20death%20squad%20turned,%20brandishing%20their%20m-16's.%20fearing%20for%20their%20lives,%20ms%20jagger%20and%20the%20relief%20workers%20began%20to%20shout,%20%e2%80%9cyou%20will%20have%20to%20kill%20us%20all,%e2%80%9d%20and,%20%e2%80%9cwe%20will%20denounce%20your%20crime%20to%20the%20world.%e2%80%9d%20there%20was%20a%20long%20pause.%20the%20death%20squad%20talked%20among%20themselves%20and,%20without%20explanation,%20left,%20leaving%20their%20hostages%20free%20-%20unharmed.%20this%20experience%20was%20a%20turning%20point%20for%20ms.%20jagger,%20marking%20the%20beginning%20of%20her%20human%20rights%20campaigning.%20she%20realised%20the%20importance%20of%20bearing%20witness%20when%20innocent%20people%e2%80%99s%20lives%20are%20at%20stake,%20and%20how%20a%20small%20act%20of%20courage%20can%20make%20a%20difference%20and%20sometimes%20save%20lives.%20upon%20her%20return%20to%20the%20us,%20she%20testified%20before%20the%20congressional%20subcommittee%20on%20inter-american%20affairs,%20to%20bring%20attention%20to%20the%20atrocities%20committed%20by%20the%20salvadorian%20government%20and%20its%20paramilitary%20forces,%20with%20the%20complicity%20of%20the%20honduran%20government.%20\\n\\nduring%20the%201980%e2%80%99s%20and%2090%e2%80%99s,%20bianca%20jagger%20campaigned%20against%20us-supported%20oppressive%20governments%20throughout%20latin%20america,%20including%20in%20el%20salvador,%20honduras%20and%20guatemala,%20denounced%20the%20contra%20war%20in%20nicaragua,%20and%20worked%20closely%20with%20the%20washington%20office%20for%20latin%20america.%20\\n\\nsince%20the%201980s%20ms%20jagger%20has%20work cognition+for+her+work+on+behalf+of+human+rights+around+the+world%2C+exposing+and+focusing+attention+on+injustice%5C%22%3B+in+1994%2C+The+United+Nations+Earth+Day+International+Award+for+%E2%80%9Cher+successful+efforts+to+protect+the+livelihood+of+the+indigenous+peoples+of+Latin+America%2C+stopping+the+rain+forest+destruction+in+Nicaragua+and+Honduras%5C%22%3B+in+2006%2C+the+World+Citizenship+Award+from+the+Nuclear+Age+Peace+Foundation%3B+in+2004+she+was+presented+with+the+World+Achievement+Award+by+Mikhail+Gorbachev%3B+in+1997%2C+the+Green+Globe+Award+from+the+Rainbow+Alliance+%5C%22for+her+environmental+campaigning%5C%22%3B+in+1998+she+was+awarded+the+American+Civil+Liberties+Union+Award%2C+for+%E2%80%9Cher+commitment+to+international+human+rights%2C+opposition+to+capital+punishment+and+the+promotion+of+civil+rights.%E2%80%9D%3B+in+2014+she+received+the+Lifetime+Achievement+Award+at+the+Latin-UK+Awards+%28LUKAS%29%3B+in+2015%2C+she+was+awarded+the+Nuestra+Madre+Award+from+Americas+for+Conservation+and+the+Arts+501c3+for+%E2%80%9Cher+work+in+environmental+stewardship+and+preservation%E2%80%9D%3B+in+2016%2C+she+was+presented+with+the+Mayahuel+Award+at+the+Guadalajara+International+Film+Festival+which+she+dedicated+to+Berta+Caceres%2C+and+the+Iguana+del+Oro+Award+at+the+Puerto+Vallarta+International+Film+Festival+%E2%80%9Cin+recognition+of+her+work+in+defence+of+human+rights+and+the+environment%E2%80%9D.%5Cn%5CnBianca+Jagger+has+been+awarded+three+doctorates%2C+honoris+causa%3A+a+Doctorate+in+Law+from+the+University+of+East+London+in+2010%2C+a+Doctorate+of+Human+Rights+from+Simmons+College%2C+Boston%2C+Massachusetts+in+2008%2C+and+a+Doctorate+of+Humanities+from+Stonehill+College%2C+Massachusetts+in+1983.%5Cn%5Cn%5CnEarly+life+and+Work%5Cn%5CnBianca+Jagger+was+born+Bianca+P%C3%A9rez-Mora+Macias+in+1950%2C+in+Managua%2C+the+capital+of+Nicaragua.+She+was+raised+by+her+mother+after+her+parents%E2%80%99+divorce.+Witnessing+the+discrimination+her+mother+encountered+as+a+single+working+woman+in+a+patriarchal+society+inspired+her+to+become+an+instrument+of+change.+She+was+determined+never+to+be+regarded+as+a+second-class+citizen+because+of+her+gender.%5Cn%5CnAs+a+teenager%2C+she+participated+in+student+demonstrations+against+the+atrocities+perpetrated+by+President+Anastasio+Somoza%27s+National+Guard.+This+inspired+her+to+pursue+her+interest+in+politics.+She+won+an+academic+scholarship+to+study+political+science+at+the+Institute+of+Political+Science+in+Paris%2C+France.+It+was+there+that+she+discovered+the+value+of+freedom+and+democracy%2C+the+rule+of+law%2C+judicial+review%2C+habeas+corpus+and+respect+for+human+rights+-+concepts+she+had+only+dreamt+about+in+Nicaragua.+%5Cn%5CnShe+married+Mick+Jagger+in+1971.+On+Christmas+Eve+in+1972%2C+she+heard+on+the+news+that+there+had+been+a+devastating+earthquake+in+Managua%2C+Nicaragua.+The+earthquake+killed+10%2C000+people%2C+injuring+20%2C000+and+leaving+approximately+200%2C000+homeless.+It+reached+6.5+on+the+Richter+scale+and+sparked+huge+fires.+She+tried+to+contact+her+parents+and+when+she+couldn%27t+reach+them%2C+she+flew+to+Nicaragua+with+Mick+Jagger+the+following+day.+They+stopped+in+Jamaica+to+pick+up+a+shipment+of+medicine+which+they+took+in+a+small+charter+plane+to+Managua.+When+they+landed%2C+they+found+that+the+airport+was+partially+destroyed+and+shut-down.+Ms+Jagger+was+anxious+to+find+her+parents.+She+decided+to+drive+through+the+burning+city+to+look+for+them.+%E2%80%9C%E2%80%98I+will+never+forget+the+stench+of+the+charred+bodies%2C+when+I+drove+through+the+rubble+of+Managua%2C%E2%80%9D+Ms.+Jagger+has+said.+Her+parents+homes+were+destroyed+and+she+couldn%27t+find+them.+In+desperation%2C+she+put+out+an+announcement+on+the+radio+and+fortunately%2C+she+found+her+parents+unharmed+three+days+later+in+the+city+of+Leon.+%5Cn%5CnMs+Jagger+learned+that+aid+from+the+U.S.+and+elsewhere+was+being+misappropriated+by+the+Somoza+regime%3A+these+ruthless+acts+of+pillage+eventually+fuelled+the+Sandinista+Revolution+and+motivated+her+to+fight+repression%2C+corruption+and+injustice.+After+her+visit+to+Nicaragua%2C+Bianca+Jagger+urged+Mick+Jagger+and+the+Rolling+Stones+to+do+a+relief+concert.+In+1993+they+performed+in+L.A.+to+raise+funds+for+the+victims+of+the+earthquake%2C+one+of+the+first+relief+concerts.%5Cn%5CnIn+the+spring+of+1979+Bianca+Jagger+joined+forces+with+the+British+Red+Cross+to+raise+funds+for+the+victims+of+the+conflict+in+Nicaragua%3B+she+then+flew+to+her+homeland+to+join+the+International+Red+Cross+to+help+on+the+ground.+1979%2C+the+year+of+her+divorce%2C+coincided+with+the+fall+of+the+Somoza+dictator.%5Cn%5CnIn+1981+Bianca+Jagger+travelled+to+Honduras+on+a+US+Congressional+fact-finding+mission%2C+visiting+a+UN+refugee+camp%2C+20+km+from+the+border+of+El+Salvador.+During+her+visit+to+the+camp+an+armed+death+squad+crossed+the+border+from+El+Salvador%2C+with+the+Honduran+army%E2%80%99s+blessing%2C+entered+the+camp+and+rounded+up+about+forty+refugees+to+take+them+back+to+El+Salvador.+Ms.+Jagger%2C+the+delegation+and+the+relief+workers+feared+that+the+death+squads+were+going+to+kill+the+hostages+once+they+arrived+in+Salvadorian+territory.+Armed+only+with+cameras%2C+they+followed+the+death+squad+and+hostages+for+approximately+half+an+hour.+Finally%2C+they+came+within+earshot.+The+death+squad+turned%2C+brandishing+their+M-16%27s.+Fearing+for+their+lives%2C+Ms+Jagger+and+the+relief+workers+began+to+shout%2C+%E2%80%9CYou+will+have+to+kill+us+all%2C%E2%80%9D+and%2C+%E2%80%9CWe+will+denounce+your+crime+to+the+world.%E2%80%9D+There+was+a+long+pause.+The+death+squad+talked+among+themselves+and%2C+without+explanation%2C+left%2C+leaving+their+hostages+free+-+unharmed.+This+experience+was+a+turning+point+for+Ms.+Jagger%2C+marking+the+beginning+of+her+human+rights+campaigning.+She+realised+the+importance+of+bearing+witness+when+innocent+people%E2%80%99s+lives+are+at+stake%2C+and+how+a+small+act+of+courage+can+make+a+difference+and+sometimes+save+lives.+Upon+her+return+to+the+US%2C+she+testified+before+The+Congressional+Subcommittee+on+Inter-American+Affairs%2C+to+bring+attention+to+the+atrocities+committed+by+the+Salvadorian+government+and+its+paramilitary+forces%2C+with+the+complicity+of+the+Honduran+Government.+%5Cn%5CnDuring+the+1980%E2%80%99s+and+90%E2%80%99s%2C+Bianca+Jagger+campaigned+against+US-supported+oppressive+governments+throughout+Latin+America%2C+including+in+El+Salvador%2C+Honduras+and+Guatemala%2C+denounced+the+Contra+war+in+Nicaragua%2C+and+worked+closely+with+the+Washington+Office+for+Latin+America.+%5Cn%5CnSince+the+1980s+Ms+Jagger+has+worked+closely+with+human+rights+organizations+such+as+Amnesty+International+and+Human+Rights+Watch.%5Cn%5CnBosnia%5Cn%5CnIn+1993+Bianca+Jagger+visited+the+former+Yugoslavia%2C+to+document+the+mass+rape+of+women+in+Bosnia.+In+July+1995%2C+when+the+United+Nations+%E2%80%9Csafe+area%E2%80%9D+of+Srebrenica+was+overrun+by+Bosnian+Serb+troops%2C+some+8%2C000+civilians%2C+virtually+the+entire+male+population%2C+were+systematically+massacred.+Ms.+Jagger+wrote+a+decisive+essay%3A+%E2%80%98J%E2%80%99accuse%3A+the+Betrayal+of+Srebrenica%2C%E2%80%99+a+detailed+account+of+the+massacre%2C+which+was+published+world-wide.+Since+then+she+has+spoken+on+behalf+of+the+survivors.+For+many+years+Ms+Jagger+campaigned+to+stop+the+genocide+taking+place+in+Bosnia+and%2C+later%2C+to+make+the+perpetrators+accountable+before+the+International+Criminal+Tribunal+for+the+former+Yugoslavia+%28ICTY%29.+She+testified+on+this+issue+before+the+Helsinki+Commission+on+Human+Rights%2C+the+United+States+Congressional+Human+Rights+Caucus%2C+the+International+Operations+Subcommittee+on+Human+Rights%2C+and+the+British+and+European+Parliaments.+%5Cn%5CnBetween+1993+and+1996%2C+Bianca+Jagger+evacuated+22+children+out+of+Bosnia+to+receive+medical+care+in+the+United+States.+She+personally+evacuated+two+gravely+ill+children%2C+Sabina+and+Mohamed+from+Tusla%2C+Bosnia.+Tragically%2C+Sabina+did+not+survive+the+evacuation+trip+and+died+a+couple+of+days+after+they+arrived+in+Split%2C+Croatia.+Mohamed+travelled+with+Ms.+Jagger+to+the+US+and+underwent+successful+heart+surgery+at+Columbia+Presbyterian+Hospital+in+New+York.+Mohamed+lived+with+Ms.+Jagger+for+a+year%2C+and+then+with+his+parents+in+New+Jersey%2C+before+the+family+returned+to+Bosnia.+This+experience+inspired+Ms+Jagger+to+campaign+for+children%E2%80%99s+rights%2C+peace+and+justice%2C+and+to+set+up+the+BJHRF%3A+to+speak+out+on+behalf+of+the+most+vulnerable.%5Cn%5CnMs+Jagger+has+continued+to+call+for+the+perpetrators+of+the+Bosnian+genocide+to+be+brought+to+justice.+She+welcomed+the+recent+conviction+of+Radovan+Karadzic%2C+the+former+Bosnian+Serb+leader%2C+who+was+convicted+of+genocide%2C+war+crimes+and+crimes+against+humanity+by+a+United+Nations+tribunal+on+March+24th+2016.%5Cn%5Cn%E2%80%98Iraq+-+an+illegal%2C+immoral+and+unwinnable+war%E2%80%99%5Cn%5CnBianca+Jagger+was+in+New+York+on+September+11th%2C+2001.+Three+days+after+the+terrorist+attacks%2C+she+visited+Ground+Zero+and+paid+tribute+to+the+firemen%2C+policemen+and+rescue+teams+who+had+worked+24%2F7+to+find+life+amid+the+rubble.+She+decried+the+attacks+as+crimes+against+humanity.+She+urged+President+Bush+to+act+in+accordance+to+international+law+and+cautioned+against+revenge+rather+than+justice.+She+called+for+justice+found+not+in+the+killing+fields+of+Afghanistan%2C+but+before+the+international+courts.+%5Cn%5CnThe+Bar+Human+Rights+Committee+for+England+and+Wales+made+Bianca+Jagger+their+2001+keynote+lecturer+at+St+Paul%E2%80%99s+Cathedral%2C+where+she+spoke+on+Justice+vs.+Revenge.+She+said%3A%5Cn%5CnIn+the+end%2C+if+we+want+to+eradicate+terrorism%2C+it+will+not+be+achieved+by+waging+%5Cnwars+on+the+oppressed%2C+ravaged+nations.+It+will+not+be+achieved+by+drafting+legislations+that+will+deprive+us+of+our+civil+liberties%2C+and+by+giving+up+due+process+and+judicial+review.+It+will+not+be+achieved+by+incarcerating+potential+future+terrorists+without+appeal.+It+will+certainl 0%2C000+and+leaving+approximately+200%2C000+homeless.+It+reached+6.5+on+the+Richter+scale+and+sparked+huge+fires.+She+tried+to+contact+her+parents+and+when+she+couldn%27t+reach+them%2C+she+flew+to+Nicaragua+with+Mick+Jagger+the+following+day.+They+stopped+in+Jamaica+to+pick+up+a+shipment+of+medicine+which+they+took+in+a+small+charter+plane+to+Managua.+When+they+landed%2C+they+found+that+the+airport+was+partially+destroyed+and+shut-down.+Ms+Jagger+was+anxious+to+find+her+parents.+She+decided+to+drive+through+the+burning+city+to+look+for+them.+%E2%80%9C%E2%80%98I+will+never+forget+the+stench+of+the+charred+bodies%2C+when+I+drove+through+the+rubble+of+Managua%2C%E2%80%9D+Ms.+Jagger+has+said.+Her+parents+homes+were+destroyed+and+she+couldn%27t+find+them.+In+desperation%2C+she+put+out+an+announcement+on+the+radio+and+fortunately%2C+she+found+her+parents+unharmed+three+days+later+in+the+city+of+Leon.+%5Cn%5CnMs+Jagger+learned+that+aid+from+the+U.S.+and+elsewhere+was+being+misappropriated+by+the+Somoza+regime%3A+these+ruthless+acts+of+pillage+eventually+fuelled+the+Sandinista+Revolution+and+motivated+her+to+fight+repression%2C+corruption+and+injustice.+After+her+visit+to+Nicaragua%2C+Bianca+Jagger+urged+Mick+Jagger+and+the+Rolling+Stones+to+do+a+relief+concert.+In+1993+they+performed+in+L.A.+to+raise+funds+for+the+victims+of+the+earthquake%2C+one+of+the+first+relief+concerts.%5Cn%5CnIn+the+spring+of+1979+Bianca+Jagger+joined+forces+with+the+British+Red+Cross+to+raise+funds+for+the+victims+of+the+conflict+in+Nicaragua%3B+she+then+flew+to+her+homeland+to+join+the+International+Red+Cross+to+help+on+the+ground.+1979%2C+the+year+of+her+divorce%2C+coincided+with+the+fall+of+the+Somoza+dictator.%5Cn%5CnIn+1981+Bianca+Jagger+travelled+to+Honduras+on+a+US+Congressional+fact-finding+mission%2C+visiting+a+UN+refugee+camp%2C+20+km+from+the+border+of+El+Salvador.+During+her+visit+to+the+camp+an+armed+death+squad+crossed+the+border+from+El+Salvador%2C+with+the+Honduran+army%E2%80%99s+blessing%2C+entered+the+camp+and+rounded+up+about+forty+refugees+to+take+them+back+to+El+Salvador.+Ms.+Jagger%2C+the+delegation+and+the+relief+workers+feared+that+the+death+squads+were+going+to+kill+the+hostages+once+they+arrived+in+Salvadorian+territory.+Armed+only+with+cameras%2C+they+followed+the+death+squad+and+hostages+for+approximately+half+an+hour.+Finally%2C+they+came+within+earshot.+The+death+squad+turned%2C+brandishing+their+M-16%27s.+Fearing+for+their+lives%2C+Ms+Jagger+and+the+relief+workers+began+to+shout%2C+%E2%80%9CYou+will+have+to+kill+us+all%2C%E2%80%9D+and%2C+%E2%80%9CWe+will+denounce+your+crime+to+the+world.%E2%80%9D+There+was+a+long+pause.+The+death+squad+talked+among+themselves+and%2C+without+explanation%2C+left%2C+leaving+their+hostages+free+-+unharmed.+This+experience+was+a+turning+point+for+Ms.+Jagger%2C+marking+the+beginning+of+her+human+rights+campaigning.+She+realised+the+importance+of+bearing+witness+when+innocent+people%E2%80%99s+lives+are+at+stake%2C+and+how+a+small+act+of+courage+can+make+a+difference+and+sometimes+save+lives.+Upon+her+return+to+the+US%2C+she+testified+before+The+Congressional+Subcommittee+on+Inter-American+Affairs%2C+to+bring+attention+to+the+atrocities+committed+by+the+Salvadorian+government+and+its+paramilitary+forces%2C+with+the+complicity+of+the+Honduran+Government.+%5Cn%5CnDuring+the+1980%E2%80%99s+and+90%E2%80%99s%2C+Bianca+Jagger+campaigned+against+US-supported+oppressive+governments+throughout+Latin+America%2C+including+in+El+Salvador%2C+Honduras+and+Guatemala%2C+denounced+the+Contra+war+in+Nicaragua%2C+and+worked+closely+with+the+Washington+Office+for+Latin+America.+%5Cn%5CnSince+the+1980s+Ms+Jagger+has+worked+closely+with+human+rights+organizations+such+as+Amnesty+International+and+Human+Rights+Watch.%5Cn%5CnBosnia%5Cn%5CnIn+1993+Bianca+Jagger+visited+the+former+Yugoslavia%2C+to+document+the+mass+rape+of+women+in+Bosnia.+In+July+1995%2C+when+the+United+Nations+%E2%80%9Csafe+area%E2%80%9D+of+Srebrenica+was+overrun+by+Bosnian+Serb+troops%2C+some+8%2C000+civilians%2C+virtually+the+entire+male+population%2C+were+systematically+massacred.+Ms.+Jagger+wrote+a+decisive+essay%3A+%E2%80%98J%E2%80%99accuse%3A+the+Betrayal+of+Srebrenica%2C%E2%80%99+a+detailed+account+of+the+massacre%2C+which+was+published+world-wide.+Since+then+she+has+spoken+on+behalf+of+the+survivors.+For+many+years+Ms+Jagger+campaigned+to+stop+the+genocide+taking+place+in+Bosnia+and%2C+later%2C+to+make+the+perpetrators+accountable+before+the+International+Criminal+Tribunal+for+the+former+Yugoslavia+%28ICTY%29.+She+testified+on+this+issue+before+the+Helsinki+Commission+on+Human+Rights%2C+the+United+States+Congressional+Human+Rights+Caucus%2C+the+International+Operations+Subcommittee+on+Human+Rights%2C+and+the+British+and+European+Parliaments.+%5Cn%5CnBetween+1993+and+1996%2C+Bianca+Jagger+evacuated+22+children+out+of+Bosnia+to+receive+medical+care+in+the+United+States.+She+personally+evacuated+two+gravely+ill+children%2C+Sabina+and+M So interesting! Let's find out what the limit is, and impose it!

Kind of. If I understand correctly, programs (especially C programs) could have underlying security issues that would only be exploitable with more than X bytes submitted -- which could be large X, say 2^16 or 2^32 bytes for an integer overflow rather than a buffer overflow. That could be a defense-in-depth reason for (especially C) programs to set arbitrary limits on values that are expected not to get that large. A separate and probably more common reason would be performance -- you can just allocate an X-sized buffer instead of arranging to grow as needed.
Above is offered for fun -- in practice I think we're doing the right thing as long as we're doing our stuff in managed languages like Python/Ruby/JS, and configuring underlying C programs according to their docs.
