Images that are used on the web benefit from being optimized to the smallest size possible. Yahoo's smush.it service was great for this. The service's URLs appear to have changed, but two endpoints still work:
http://www.smushit.com/ysmush.it/ws.php http://imgopt.com/ws.php
Neither appears to be working at the moment (at least with HTTPS). This FAQ partially explains how it works:
