Yosemite Compatibility #495

There are a few folks here at the [HPC]^3 Workshop with Yosemite installed on their system. I've noticed that the bash code for detecting the current OS X version doesn't work properly (it only grabs a single digit, I think), and also seen an issue with building Cython on @rioyokota 's computer, but I have not reproduced that yet on another machine.

Let's use this issue as a laundry list to collect any problems that keep basic environments (Proteus, FEniCS, etc... from working).
