This PR does some light refactoring to prepare for creating the PARtifact, which will come in another PR to help ease review.

Add a new method to the driver so we can grab an image "digest" to store on the artifact, for pushed images.
clean up the implementation for generated data so we always set a default, like we do for the generated data set by the core.
update tests to work with the new refactored layout.
Add a couple of docs clarifications.

I'm going to leave all the artifact tweaking for the next PR, but I'll think about it.
