Backport: Fix passing in roles (#113) #124

Changes proposed in this PR:

This backports the fix for passing in IAM roles. I backported a few test changes and fixes for the examples.

This will merge into the release/0.4.x branch, which we can prep and then release following the usual process.

Fixes #123.
