This reverts commit fbb635023228bba8a4abbaf1052fb03248eaf566.

It's been unused for long enough, and it's all there in the history.

This makes me sad, but I don't think we have any way forward on this (mysterious segfault we can't easily repro). Maybe some day this will make it into upstream
