The catalog says

Select six additional courses specific to the area of emphasis chosen (natural science, social science, or arts and humanities) and three additional courses from outside the selected area of emphasis.

but, then the catalog goes on to say:

  • Three courses from outside your area of emphasis.
    • Select one or two social sciences courses from the following:
      • […]
    • Select one or two arts and humanities courses from the following:

and it only lists some of the courses from the other areas of emphasis.

So, can I pick any course from the Social Sciences area to count towards my Natural Science area, or just some of them?

I've got technical solutions for both approaches, but I need to pick one.

can any course from the other "area of emphasis" count towards your primary one, or is it really just the ones listed in the catalog?

It's really just the ones listed. "Breadth" vs. "depth" courses (the beadth ones count; the depth ones don't.)

most of the Electives sections say "One of these two courses must carry Environmental Studies Departmental designation.", and then they go on to list primarily ENVST and BI/ES courses. Do BI/ES courses count as part of the ENVST department here?

Yes.
