I don't know, but the log of the VPS is full of unsuccessful attempts to login as root from IPs from China, so perhaps it didn't handle the load (if they were also scanning ports, I am using other port than 22, so they had to scan the ports... or sending the http requests..) Now, it's ok, but still under 'attack'.
