[hax] Save vs Save and continue editing vs autosave #1873

I save frequently while authoring. Each time you save the page, you close out of edit mode and need to re-enter edit mode. Some apps offer two save options: Save, and Save and Close.

Save and close? Are you asking for Save and continue editing vs save refreshing the screen?

WilliamMRose commented 6 months ago

Exactly that. As it is now, Save really behaves like Save and Close, so if you are saving often you constantly have to re-enter edit mode. It would be better to remain in edit mode until you are ready to leave it.

are you actually trying to save for the purposes of other people instantly seeing the change or are you trying to ensure you don't lose work when you are committing this operation?

If it's seeing other pages, that's saving. If it's not losing work, that's almost more of a draft capability for saving work vs publishing changes. If it's autosave for the purposes of always being visible, that's another possible avenue here.

We've discussed the notion before of editing the site as in editing... anything / everything and that there isn't really save so much as taking things out of edit mode but the natural state is everything saving all the time. This is far more complex, but just trying to understand scope of the ask.

Bryan,

OK, to clarify, for me it is an efficiency issue in authoring, as simple as that. There are other valid considerations as well, but for me that is really about it.

So, if I am working in Microsoft Word, after long years I am in the habit of frequentlty saving (Command-S takes but a split second). BUT (and this is the heart of the issue) when I do that, Word doesn’t throw me back out to a dashboard or something where I need to re-enter the file I just saved…imagine how annoying and inefficient it would be if it did. At any time, I can choose to close the file and reopen it at a later time, which is fine. But I remain right where I was, ready to write more content, save, write, save. In Word, you live in edit mode until you choose not to. Very efficient.

Although we are talking web authoring here and not desktop publishing, the same holds true. Building pages can be fairly involved, with a mix of content types and layouts. Very iterative process. So, you are saving often. BUT, each time I do that I am back out in non-edit mode, so I immediately need to click again to return to edit mode, find my place in the page again, etc. That is all waste (most of the time, not all of the time).

With HAX being “quasi” WYSIWYG, there are times in authoring when you really DO want to not only save but also to see what the page truly looks like. I do it often.

Hence the idea of a choice of “saves”, or of autosaving and a new “close page” button instead. Haven’t thought about that much, just expressing an UX observation. I don’t have an “ask” as much as I am giving feedback.

This is where Annie Hughes (and/or our IDs) come in handy. I don’t think I am the only one, but maybe I am.
