Actually I'm not sure. But right now, if I'm not a member of a group, I can still click on the interface to "Follow" any thread - what happens if I do? Do I get emails even though I'm not a member? Maybe I shouldn't have that option unless I join the group.
(also the button should say "Follow Thread" - right now it just says Follow which is kind of ambiguous).
