in the short term I don't think we need worry about efficiency---as I mentioned, I hit the storage limit only after a year and haven't noticed any performance issues, so that gives us a year to think about handling performance issues for anyone else.

Have we verified that the current codebase is stable and working? @schilippe had added two commits recently and I'd want to test unpacked before pushing out a new version.
