What is the best method to create balance tables in R?

e.g. Tables like Table II in Chattophadyay & Duflo (2004)

have tried inputting a matrix into Stargazer but doesn't handle options very well when I do that

I like RStudio's gt although it's still heavily under development: https://github.com/rstudio/gt.

Or knitr's kable() command which is more mature but less pretty. Stargazer is a bit of a nightmare if it doesn't just work out of the box I find.
