We should support people entering lots of similar entries (e.g. events) #1440

Have a look at this list: https://oerworldmap.org/resource/?q=Mediencoaches+#urn:uuid:77a0836a-9626-42c1-8e8b-645b1ba76c27 I think only a HiWi is entering such similar entries 12 times by doing all copying 12 times. We should think of a feature like “create a similar entry”. For example komoot does this (you copy a tour and change the points you want to change), this is very useful! I think there should be a button “create a similar entry” on the view of an entry and then the template opens with all the fields copied from the original, but you can’t save it unless you have changed something (date, location, title etc.). This would help people entering events a lot. I also talked to the person who does this for the DIPF. Maybe we should start with events?

Sounds reasonable to me. Two comments: 1) It seems to make sense especially in the case, that you have to add several similar events. @karindr: Can you think of other cases, where this would make sense? 2) Maybe this problem could be tackled with Open Refine as well? If someone has 20 Events in an Spreadsheed, we could make an bunch-import for this...

It will be events in the most cases. I can think of simmilar publications or simmilar projects for one organisation but this will be not so often. The problem with doing an extra import is, that the users have to contact us to have this done. The idea was support the people in the moment they are working with the map otherwise they maybe will simply stop entering their events. If it too complicated to establish, we don't have to do this, but it would be helpful for our list of events.

Seeing this list of very related entries, makes me think of https://github.com/hbz/oerworldmap/issues/1153 – at least if more people start adding something like this. It would give a much better user experience if the search for "Mediencoaches" would only bring one result for the general entry of the course/event series and you would only see the course/event instances when clicking on it.

Based on this, we could also make it easier to create a course instance by offering a button "create event instance" or similar that opens a web form with pre-populated fields. I already got familiar with representing courses and their instances using schema.org, see the web by @literarymachine for generating JSON-LD describing a course + instances: http://graphthinking.com/jpf/

The idea of beeing able to create a course is very good, so in this case there would be 3 courses with 4 events each. But do you want to cluster the 3 courses too? This would be the same question for for example a workshop that is done 10 times at different places. This is not the same as a course with different events. How could this be handled?

karindr commented 6 years ago

When you filter for events, the lists are good (with date and location). In result lists mixed with other entry types we should add to the name of the event the date to make the different entries of series of events distinctive. This should be the same for the lists in the country view.

A user is asking for the possibility to copy events to be faster entering new events, see:

Noch eine Frage: Ich hatte angefangen unser Termine nach- und einzupflegen, aber das ist etwas mühsam, da man ja immer wieder alle Metadaten eintragen muss. Gibt es eine Möglichkeit einen Termin zu kopieren und dann nur einige Punkte zu ändern? Es sind ja oft immer die gleichen Angaben.
