TouCans down after possible battery short #7

TouCans did a keyer reboot and then shut down completely while I was adjusting one of the output antenna wires. The radio did not restart. It looks like two different things could have happened.

  1. The power leads--and therefore the battery--shorted across the edge of the tuna can
  2. The RF terminals shorted together and blew the Tuna Topper amplifier transistor.

The green LED on the amplifier no longer lights.

I disassembled the radio and removed the power leads to the amplifier. The Rockmite did not start.

When I plugged the battery pack into a charger, the RockMite did start. With any luck, when i hook the power leads back to the amplifier the reset battery pack will provide power and the rig will be back up and running.

I measured resistance between the three leads of the power transistor and all showed open circuits which I believe is correct, meaning the transistor did not fail.

Next step: measure resistance across power terminals at the amplifier.

The two terminals on the amplifier show an open circuit as they should.

Next step: Let the battery charge fully because I'm too tired to reliably make the solder joints right now. Then, solder the power leads back to the amplifier and test the radio again.
