Research shows that Baluns are needed for coax line to dipole antennas. The desktop Rockmite is working fine without one though. I'm tabling this for now. Another solution has been identified above, which is simply to embed the radio in the dipole.
Does the coax fed antenna need a balun? Are the exterior of the coax cable and I becoming part of the antenna system unintentionally? There are lots of detailed models on this site. https://owenduffy.net/balun/Guanella/G.1-1.htm along with references to foundational articles on baluns.
Not going to an unbalanced conductor (coax) seems like the simplest solution. Then, I just need to develop a quick connect/disonnect system for radio in the antenna operation.
