WIP changes for comparison #2

NOTE: latest changes include a switch from RedCarpet to Kramdown, which means fenced code blocks need triple tilde's (~) instead of triple backticks.

I didn't go through and make these updates yet, so highlighting is temporarily broken.

Correction: I did updates the source to make highlighting work on the "installing" page, so that may serve as a useful example.
