I definitely vote to keep the zoom control. We can come up with our own UI for the controls if we need to, but zooming out to get surrounding context seems like a pretty essential part of navigating the map imho. We could do it like that giant xkcd map that doesn't let you zoom and takes a really long time to explore and find things, but I think we want to err on the side of being able to find things. We're already abstracting the content away enough I think.
