Is it possible to have this side by side with the plasma and choose between either environments in the Login screen?

IE, when logging in, you can choose which session (Plasma or I3) to log into.

Yes, in that case do not delete any .desktop files and just pick whichever you want when you log in!

Also make sure you don't pick i3 without plasma accidentally, because then the benefits of this setup would not be active!
