Did you manage to solve this issue? I would also be fine with using a different shortcut rather than just the meta
key. Not even Alt + F1
is working for me.

I did not unfortunately. Though, I didn't exactly search vigorously, so there may still be an answer somewhere
I managed to resolve my issue.
Right click on the Application Launcher icon. Click on Configure Application Launcher...
. Navigate to Keyboard Shortcuts
and set a shortcut you like, setting just the Meta
key by setting it to Meta + F1
didn't work for my though maybe someone else has luck with that.
The combination can't be set in I3, if it is remove it first, restart I3 and add the shortcut in Application Launcher afterwards.
When using i3, the meta button no longer opens the application menu.
Also, meta+1/2/3 etc. doesn't trigger any of the applications on the taskbar.I suspect this is intended, because i3 uses those key commands for its own purposes. However, i want to keep i3's ability to hold the meta button and clicking to drag and resize windows. Is there anyway i can keep both shortcuts? So on short presses, the application menu is triggered, but on long presses it acts as a mouse modifier?
I disabled the meta+num commands in the config file, as i don't really use workspaces, but I still don't know how to reactivate the plasma shortcuts.edit: After removing the meta+num shortcuts from the config and restarting my PC, the task bar application shortcuts worked again. Still can't activate application menu with meta though.
