The only posts I've seen about this issue says to re-install iTunes. Try
updating to
7.5 maybe.

I think this problem is caused when you install iTunes and Quicktime
seperatly... it doesn't work on my computer
(win xp sp2, media center, build 2600 v5.1) I get this problem with all the
versions...

This problem is caused if your Apple Mobile Device service isn't started. If
you are
able to start that service but the error persists then go to the device manager
and
update your iphone's driver selecting to choose the driver yourself. When it
gives
you the list with the 'have disk' button, click the 'have disk' button and
point to:
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Apple\Mobile Device Support\Drivers and tell it
to use
the driver that is in there. That driver should communicate with the AM device
service.

just installed the latest iTunes for checking (7.6.2), but problem not solved
yet...
I did get to run the program when I unplugged my iPhone, but when I plugged it
in,
the program didnt find it... and when I tried to boot the program again, the
problem
persisted.
I also checked the drivers thingie mentioned...
what else to do?
thanks in advance!

I got the same error when the device is not connected to PC (WIndows XP SP2
system).
Would be nice to warn the user to connect the device first if this is required.

RESOLVED!!!! I had the same problem on my vista home premium 32bit.... the fix
is
reinstalling Apple Mobile Device Support!!!! iTunes has nothing to do with this,
iTunes does not manage the Mobile Support service, so reinstall that, and if u
guys
really wanna be sure everything is ok, reinstall ANY program that has ANYTHING
to do
with Apple!!! This fixed the AMDevice issue for me, hope it works for u as
well!!!

Mine worked this way: I am on Vista 32bit.
On the Start menu, click Run.
In the Open field, type services.msc and click OK. A list of devices will be
displayed.
View the list In alphabetical order and verify that the "Apple Mobile Device
Service" status is "Started."
If the status does not indicate the service is started or automatic,
right-click
Apple Mobile Device Service and choose Start from the shortcut menu.
If the service is installed and started or automatic, right-click the service
and
choose Restart from the shortcut menu.
Don't forget to install ziphone ibrikr patch for 1.1.4 even if you dont have
ibrickr.
Add i.unlock.no as a source and install that patch.
ENJoY!!

I had the same problem on Win 7 x64 - I solved it this way:
1. Uninstall Apple Mobile Device Support
2. Load itunes 9.03 from here: http://www.oldapps.com/itunes.php
3. Open the iTunes64Setup903.exe with WinRar and execute the
AppleMobileDeviceSupport64.msi to any folder
4. install it and have fun!!!!

Okay it is strange, but it worked for me:
I tried it on my wife´s PC and it worked with the newest iTunes and the newest
Apple Mobile Device Support, so I copied her Version and deleted the folder on
my PC. Now I copied it in progamfiles (x86) and it works. Here is this working
version for you now
