3 check-TESTS failing after build. #7

Full build log is attached, jump to the first check-TESTS reference. 

I'm using a Debian sid chroot to build.

Can you try building with NDEBUG defined and see if the tests pass for you 
then?  I see the same assertion without NDEBUG.

I'm going to try to take a look at this soon.  I've got a bunch of Ubuntu 
chroots for testing; I'll add an amd64 sid chroot and see if I can reproduce 
the test failure you're seeing.   I'm going to consolidate this bug into #19 
where I'm tracking many test failures related to system library / compiler / 
architecture changes.
