Fonts not showing on Fedora 28 #93

Hello!

I've built helio on fedora 28, and I'm getting this:

All texts have those tofus as characters.

I've installed the required libraries, cloned the repo, went to the LinuxMakefile folder, and runned CONFIG=Release64 make -j 5.

I tried to see if the binary distribution had the same problem, and it did.

Am I missing some font on my system? Is it a problem with JUCER, maybe?

When building with CONFIG=Debug, things work as expected image

Looks like it have selected the wrong font to use by default: it tries to load Noto at the start (see #59). Could you take a look in the settings to check which one it have picked?

As for the second screenshot, it's the earlier version, where the built-in font was used.

Works like a charm! Do you plan to distribute the fonts as well? As of now, I think it would be nice to put Noto or some other font as a requirement for linux; getting that first screenshot is kinda awkward :p

Yep, I'm planning to include it in the installers for Windows and macOS maybe. On Linux I still have no clue how to do it, but for Linux it might be enough to fix font picking logic, assuming that most systems already have Noto installed. At the moment, the logic goes like this:

I'd guess that in your case the system has a lot of Noto modifications installed and the app have picked the first of them (like, Noto Arabic or so) having no latin characters at all - just because the exact match for Noto Sans was not found. Could you share the output of fc-list | grep Noto command?

I tried to undo my installation to see what the output would be before, but the overall result was slightly different, since dnf didn't remove all the fonts:

But, with this last output, not even the tofus are rendered on helio :p

On Fedora, at least, the Noto fonts don't seem to be installed by default; I'll check later and update here.

I checked my work pc, and it seems fedora ships with the Noto fonts on the second output above.

Thanks, I've updated the code so that it should only take a proper Noto modification, if any.

I guess what's happenning now is what you said about helio choosing a Noto font without Latin characters, but no characters were rendered.

For the reason that font search is quite costly - about 800 ms for me - it only happens for the first time, then app remembers the picked font's name and uses it in all subsequent launches. So most likely, in your case it failed to load the font that have been already deleted (I'm not sure if I can fix that at the moment, as JUCE doesn't seem to provide a sane way to check if the font is still valid).
