Boot screen is just black #541

Open 0ud opened 1 year ago

Hi! After burning the iso to the USB stick and choosing it from the boot menu, I get a black screen with just ":" and a blinking cursor under it. I tried waiting for it but nothing happened.

Device: HP ProBook 6450b with Intel HD graphics

Edit: I'm using the latest iso from the releases tab

UPDATE: after using Ventoy instead of dd, the black screen is gone but now it's stuck at freebsd logo

Please boot in verbose mode as described in the documentation, and see which lines are printed last. Thanks!

Mounting from cd9660:/dev/iso9660/LIVE failed with error 19

loader variables: vfs.root.mount from=cd9660:/dev/iso9660/LIVE

and then shows sort of manual for "manual root filesystem specification"

Then (ahcich1:SNTF0x0001) for 4 times then (random:unblocking device)

I'll wait and see if any other things happen

So it can't find the ISO, for whatever reason.

Booting from USB on a HP Probook 6550b (which is a similar device) I had the same issue. Just : with a blinking cursor under it.

This happens because either your BIOS is an older version that doesn't support UEFI yet or UEFI is turned off (which it is by default).

I solved it by checking the current BIOS-version. You can do that by pressing F10 when you turn the laptop on and then go into System Information. In my case the BIOS-version was not the most recent (it didn't support UEFI at all). I downloaded the most recent BIOS from the HP-website. In my case this was Windows-only software but since there still was a Windows-system on the laptop that was no issue. There seems to be a way to make a bootable USB-disk with a BIOS-update but I didn't figure out how to do that.

Once you have the latest BIOS it is probably suitable for UEFI-booting. If this option is available you'll find it by entering the BIOS again, go into System Configuration and choose Boot Options. Somewhere in the list you should find an option called UEFI Boot Mode. Turn that on. (see attached screenshot) Save the changes.

Boot your system pressing F9 (Boot Device Options). Choose Boot from EFI File. Select the File System on your USB-stick, click EFI and then click BOOT, then click bootx64.efi (or what's relevant for your system if it's not 64 bit). If all is well now your laptop will boot from the USB-stick.

This might also be the solution to issue #538
