column mode doesn't work as expected #582

What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. select a vertical range with column select
2. try to write something that should go in all lines
3. it's only written in the first line

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?
it should be similar to other column mode in other editors (e.g. notepad++)

What version of the product are you using? On what operating system?
2.4.3 on windows 7
