Apparently, it was originally going to possible to have full conversations with Ashley and Kaidan while at the salarian camp on Virmire. There are remnants of this in cha00_humanfemale_ashley_dlg and cha00_humanmale_kaidan_dlg, mainly a bunch of lines with conditional 816 (Virmire_Active). Unfortunately, due to the way the conditional works, these lines are played if you talk to Ash/Kaidan immediately after Virmire, so you could end up getting lines like "We're stuck in this swamp for now" when you're back on the Normandy.
