One current workaround is to use COLLADA models, though it's an arduous task..

Oh, I already know that quite well:
http://3dnature.com/scenesample.html#KML
We're the ones who discovered that your COLLADA models have a limit on the
number of
vertices. Don't get me started on why COLLADA/XML is a terrible choice for a 3D
object file format.

COLLADA models seems like a workaround, but that is only a usefull workaround
if your fine-tuned terrain is higher (larger altitude) than the terrain
supplied by Google. It is not possible to make a hole in the ground using this
technique, right?
Please could this be included in the next version of KML (to be supported by GE
5.3), please, please, please.

Also when using COLLADA models to workaround this problem, forces you to also
supply ground imagery, which makes the ground model stand out and not smoothly
blend in with the GE ground.
