Works perfectly fine for me with the same Forge and mod version. Looks like that's an issue with your Linux installation. Please check that all your packages are up to date and your Minecraft installation is done properly.
Please also check if this happens without the mod installed.
They are up to date. Have you tried with the JDK from the log? Disabling the mod in multiMC launches the game without problems. It is a prevailing problem I had before, but only now I reported it, so it ocurred across forge versions. Are you using any experimental apis (for a state of jdk 19) or are you depending on some concrete audio stack implementation? For some additional info I am running wireplumber 0.4.17 and pipewire 1.0.3. The crash also happens on java 21.0.2. The linux installation is basiclly a basic Ubuntu 22.04, with the only possible relevant change of using pipewire instead of pulseaudio.
Running bare install of sound physics without any other mod and on neoforge 47.1.102, for test, also crashes:
For Minecraft 1.20.1 you should use Java 17. Does the same issue happen when using the vanilla launcher?
OpenAL is attempting to use the JACK backend instead of the pulseaudio backend because both are provided by pipewire, to fix this you can either set ALSOFT_DRIVERS=pulse
environment variable for the game,
or to configure this systemwide for anything that uses openal-soft (mostly games)
create ~/.alsoftrc
with the content drivers=pulse

Indeed, setting additional ALSOFT_DRIVERS=pulse
parameter works. Is this a workaround for some invalid configuration on my part, or is it a problem with the mod making some assumptions or something else entirely? Can I read somewhere more about this issue? As a note, this is the first instance of a program not working correctly, so I am inclined to believe that it's some invalid mod assumptions?
No, this is purely an issue with OpenAL-Soft and can even happen with vanilla instances depending on system configuration
Although this issue is now resolved, I propose adding some kind of remark on the mod's README pages and either write directly about this workaround or give a link to this issue :+1:
