I've gone through the options available. The most relevant and suitable (open source) seems this one to me:

https://github.com/catalyst/moodle-auth_enrolkey . Pls be sure to install the the right branche (for Moodle version 3.9). @kordwarshuis could try and help out if you bump into git(hub) challenges.

First step: install the tools and try out the self-enrolment for the trial. Pls don't spend more than 2 hours on the install & test. If it won't work, report it here and we'll discuss it next meeting.

I installed the plugin. I tested and it works as intended.

Users can create a new account using their email addresses

Users can be enrolled at account creating using an enrollment key (this is optional)

Great step forward. However, because the abortion risk of newcomers is high, we need to smoothen the process and make it more interactive.

@romanova1 has reported that the currently-used plugin is not so configurable.

My experience on a smartphone has led to a few new issues, that we can gradually tackle:
