This fixes a few problems that kept me from streaming fragmented mp4 HLS from PeerTube:

the byte ranges were not used, leading to overlarge requests and reads from the wrong place
hitting the recursion limit in buf2str on large playlists
don't reallocate the entire request buffer every time a block is received
add a very basic request abort mechanism

I'm trying this on the new bitsong player, it seems to perform better on long playlists
