At the present, we have two options: to start the menu/grid with "All applications" or with the "Favorites" categories, depending on whether the option to start with favorites is enabled or not. To start with favorites is useful but not very much so if the option to show favorites on the horizontal bar is also enabled.
What I personally access more are favorites and recent files. As categories can only be changed with the mouse, the recent files are not so easily to display (typing their name is easier: but then why have a list for them?) Why not see the favorites on the bar and the recent files on the grid? Recent applications might be the preferred option for some users.
So, my suggestion would be to add two more options to "start the menu on a category": recent files and recent applications.
A supplementary or alternative suggestion could be (if possible or not too complicated) to add an option for the horizontal bar/ribbon for selecting what category should be displayed there (so that multiple combinations could be used, like favorites on the grid and recent files on the bar).
