introduce the concept of roles, or tasks, assigned to a meeple when participating in a pattern according to their position, in order to give a stronger theme to patterns. the tasks must be related to the position to help the arrangement making more sense.
when selecting, "buildings" may be placed to represent the task (in a physical version they may replace wood cubes as a less simplistic representation).
if the concept of buildings is interesting, let them remain on the board, but consider:
can they keep producing the benefits?
do they need resources, as they're being "built"?
can the current pattern system be simplified, making "artifacts" become "blueprints"?
if they are buildings, what do they output? they have a one time input (building resources), do they need another type of input to create a multi-level economy system? another input may be worker meeple time - this time no need for the pattern being complete?).
