Why is a mailto link confusing?

Many people do not currently use an email client. Opening a mailto link without an assigned target throws an error. If a website has a 'contact' link, the expected behaviour is a contact page, with a contact form.

I woud agree with that but this issue holds a lower priority as a mailto link will work well enough till we get around to it

but if this were true we'll also need to find a solution for the answer button in the email.. (the link opens the booki page which then "redirects" to a mailto link)

At least according to this, it could be a real problem as 30% is quite a lot.
