This needs to be done carefully since we have the following options:

all variants are out of stock => canonical + variants should be inactive
some variants available and others out of stock => canonical active and variants active/inactive as appropriate
canonical with no variants is out of stock => set inactive other combinations?

And don't forget inventory_exempt items which are always in stock.

This is fixed in orvis importer. Assigning to @sbatschelet for moo importer.
