ESPA-dev (2.4.0) + HDF-EOS2 + Geog projection + resampling = doesn't open in ArcGIS/ERDAS/GDAL

We're consistently receiving HDF-EOS2 files from ESPA-dev (2.4.0) that cannot 
be opened in ArcGIS, ERDAS Imagine or GDAL (all immediately crash upon 
ingesting the file), but can be opened in ENVI and HDFView. We've narrowed it 
down to any files projected in geographic coordinates and are re-sampled in 
decimal degrees, independent of file input type or resampling method. Here is 
what we've tried so far in ESPA-dev and the results:

LE7 mid- lat. scene --> (SR, HDF-EOS2, Geographic proj) = OK
LE7 mid-lat. scene --> (SR, HDF-EOS2, Geographic proj, 0.005dd w/ NN resamp) = 
Bad
LE7 mid-lat. scene --> (Custom input prod, NDVI, HDF-EOS2, Geographic proj., 
0.005dd w/ NN rasamp) = Bad
LE7 mid-lat. scene --> (SR, HDF-EOS2, Geographic proj., 0.005dd w/ CC resamp) = 
Bad

LT5 polar scene --> (SR, HDF-EOS2, Geographic proj., 0.005dd w/ NN resamp) = Bad
LT5 polar scene --> (SR, ENVI, Geographic proj., 0.005dd w/ NN resamp) = OK
