Is there any way to make this work on a mac ?

Fully functional? No. vboxmanage commands however will work thus mean you can port all except vboxdd patch.

What could be a workaround to apply it on mac ? By the way I mean OSX host with a vm running windows

If vbox on OSX doesn't contain "hardenning" you can try patch it VBoxDD component on the disk.
