I am trying to lower stupidly high fan speeds on an xserve. GUI is not working for some reason and it'd be really cool - so for now i am using the smc command which is working great. If you tell me how to check why GUI is failing to load maybe I can give you some input so you can fix it - i'd love to help out but sadly I don't speak C.

The GUI sits in the top menu bar (next to clock etc.) if you have to many menu bar items, smcFanControl main not be visible.
