Action 10: AVH new look by updating colour scheme/logo (Niels) #75

Niels emailed groups on 19/10/2017 Dear all, I’ve done something really quick and dirty: http://data.rbg.vic.gov.au/avh/. I think we can work with that. I think the logo has to be on a white background and has to be quite large, as it is a bit frumpy. If someone has an in-house designer who could do a quick mock-up in Photoshop, I could probably make it look better. Ainsley and I had a very quick side meeting when people weren’t paying attention. We think the images in the carousel need to be replaced and we need some News items, so the old ones disappear. At least the map on the About page needs to be replaced and it would be good if someone could have a look at the text. I think what is there was written at the very beginning by Jim Croft and Alison and I have progressively removed bits as they became less relevant, never quite finding the inspiration to write new content. CHAH was going to write something after some beers at the CHAH meeting in Cairns. Still waiting... I would also have liked to update the Help pages, which is really necessary, but I had hoped to do that with Alison and Ryonen and now the prospect is rather daunting.

Donna responded 27/10/2017 Hi All,

I think this is a pretty good start Niels and it does look different, which was the whole point of it. I agree, the images in the carousel could be replaced, and it makes sense to have a combo from NZ and Aust. Images. Did Alison have a folder with other images for the carousel – I thought there were more? Might be an idea to ask MAHC members from NZ to supply some images? I’m happy to follow this up.

In terms of news items, there were two action items from Wednesdays combined meeting. Pina and Frank Hemmings were to write something regarding outcomes of the ALA community projects – I can follow this up with them today. There needs to be another news item regarding the NZ data and the fact that it came online 27th June 2017. Also, Gill has new posts on the AVH FB page, we could also use these as news items on the AVH site i.e. 1. the new download options, 2. images coming online and linking to specimens, 3. using the customised filters, 4. using the ALA spatial portal to explore AVH data further – see https://www.facebook.com/AustVirtHerb/.

Regarding the Help pages – they definitely need changing, even though Alison updated the glaring things prior to it going online. I could email Ryonen and see if she had anything prepared to update the help pages – especially the new downloads page, failing that, we’ll have to pull something together from the HISCOM group.
