Supersedes #62 and #48.
I have suggested the following changes to the description of this issue to make it clearer what you're asking ALA for:
I would like to add to this list - how images provided from institutions can be linked back to the provider. Both socially and technically.
Socially - data and images provided to the ALA needs to be better identified as to its source so that providing institutions are recognised by users of the ALA as holders of that data. Currently many users think that the ALA generates all this information while institutions struggle to show their relevance.
Technically - if the institution has a image repository and associated metadata (usually more than delivered to the ALA) which is available to the public then it should be possible for a user to follow links to the original source. This may go some way to addressing the previous point.
ALA requires that the copyright on an image it receives is CC-BY, which for some photographers is too far. That won't apply to all the images in a collection, though.
Actually, ALA accepts CC-BY-NC and CC0 as well.
Gill is going to trial both CloudStor and Amazon S3 and report back to HISCOM as part of HISCOM 2019 AGM.
HISCOM to document what the community's preferred technical specification is for the provision and linking of specimen images into occurrence records held in ALA. The resulting document should be in HISCOM's Business wiki, and contain some or all of the following.
