Feature Request: Enhanced display of timestamps #44

While we're out re-thinking email, maybe we should re-think how we display
timestamps in Wave.

When looking at a new wave it is easy to tell the sequence of messages (and
duration between blips) because the time is displayed to the minute.
However, if the blip is over a day old then the time is only displayed to
the day. Is there somehow we could enhance the we we display timestamps so
that -
1. the interface is still kept "clean"
and
2. All timestamps are accessible down to the minute.
?

Potential solutions:
- OnMouseOver display complete time
- Toolbar buttom (or something) to toggle date display

Any other ideas?

Do people agree that this would be helpful?

I'm in favor of an user-option in settings to control how the timestamp is
displayed. I prefer to have the full date
always, even if it's the current date. This is because I often cut and paste
text (not just in Wave but in many apps)
and I want to preserve the actual date and author associated with the text.

As I know this is not the preferred date format of many people, I think it
should be a user-defined preference.

BTW, if you do copy and paste a document/blip (not using the copy to new wave
command), the creator info is
preserved but not the date info. I would like both.

Or maybe a "smart" feature that might group sequences of messages together
based on
their relative input time. Messages that were entered within a short time-span
(when
both users were online and actively editing the wave) display hour and minute
stamps
while only the first blip in the sequence displays the date.

Of course I think it's tricky to emphasize the grouping of messages in the
interface,
unless the grouping is restricted to strictly elements o a sub-thread.

Since the date + time is known form the start (on the same day the timestamp is
displayed the whole day) adn since there is always 1 blank line under the time
(or
date, from the next day on), maybe the easiest solution is the most obvious one?
