kern doesn't work #93

What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. typed characters in box of a form

2. highlighted them

3. held down ”control+alt+command“ and about to press ”L“ to loosen 
kerning BUT

4.  The highlight disappeared

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?
Kerning didn't work; palette went to arrow when modifier keys pressed

What version of the product are you using? On what operating system?
006 on Os 10.4.11

Please provide any additional information below.
I'll  have to go back to adding spaces by hand and getting stressed
