the sed commands didn't work on the config files, it seems that ? and + needs to be converted to \? and \+.

Sorry for the incredibly late response. Since the repo has diverged a little since this PR was filed, I've made the changes myself and added you to the commit as a co-author. Thanks for bringing this to my attention!
