BeagleJuice Purchase/ Tablet Idea #74

Even though we now have the BEC we have talked about getting a BeagleJuice battery to give the computer a fully isolated power source and since we have so much money we might as well try out the BJ given that is has convenient power indicator lights, a switch and the HiCap yields 20 hrs of run-time. If for some reason we find the added 199 grams is hurting us we could always switch back to the BEC so I see no harm in buying it given our funds.

Check it out here

These are the different types but I think we should go for the high capacity one. The four 5V output ports could support peripherals such as the BeagleTouch we've talked about.

When I was looking through the different options however, I started to think about what if we replaced the BeagleJuice and Board by just a super small tablet that had a USB port/wifi/battery/touchscreen all integrated into a clean package. This one is still too large (and I don't think it runs Linux) but at only $350 (the BJ is $270) if we could find a small enough tablet this could be a pretty attractive option. I'm going to keep looking around for one that is small enough to fit on the robot/enough batt/durable/usb port/ and capable of running linux but I wondered what you thought?

So after talking with Haj today it looks like we should wait on the BJ and see how the BEC performs.

We talked about how having a Linux based phone/tablet/or netbook would be sweet but it looks like it would introduce a lot of difficulty and uncertainty:

Possible Devices

The Chrombook seems to be potential the best option:

It looks like phone options are still not available on the market yet.

At this point, we should continue to try to get the BB to operate and once we have the whole system working, we could consider a different computing device without running the risk of encountering a roadblock that would tie up the whole project

In case the BeagleBoard doesn't work, check out these alternatives. The fit-pc might be what we're looking for - it's Intel Atom:

fit-PC2 and fit-PC2i

Miniland

Hawkboard

If we're buying a new CPU, decide before break and order it.

Also, fit-pcs offered in single board form: http://compulab.co.il/products/sbcs/#x86
