initial thoughts:

elevate a quarter of a plastic (or 3D) pipe on each side of each plate. use rods to elevate plastic
bend metal bars (like legs) and run them from one side of plate to next
3D print thin covers (ones that currently on CAD model). Less labor intensive. Not sure how long it would take to 3D print though.
elevate L brackets (with rods) on each side of plates and connect across with flat beams

3D printing has to fit in 8x8x?" is the only concern with that. Maybe made from a couple interlocking pieces...?

oh well then that seems a little more complicated than I thought. Third option probably not a good option then
