Log in error when connecting to Yahoo #848

Miranda Version : 0.8.27 (Built Jul 1 2010 16:24:38)
Unicode Build : ?? (no info provided; using English)
Test Build # (if applicable) : N/A
Plugin Version # (if applicable) : N/A (Only crash plugin added)

What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. In the Status line, click on MyYahoo icon and from the context menu, select
the "Go online" option.

What is the expected result?
Miranda should log in the Yahoo server.

What happens instead?
Windows pops up a balloon from system tray with the following message: "Yahoo
Login error: Could not connect to Yahoo service. Check your server/port and
proxy settings."

Please attach or post your VersionInfo.
( See http://wiki.miranda-im.org/Version_information )
Not sure what to report in this section: I have installed the plugin, but then
Miranda does not crash. Using Windows 7.

Additional notes:
1. My PC is on a office LAN; located behind a firewall (Squid).
   There is no proxy.
2. I can browse Yahoo Groups from the same PC using FireFox.
In fact, I am permanently logged in the Yahoo Group.
(Would that allow Miranda to access Yahoo servers directly??)
3. Miranda shows the following default setting for Yahoo login server:
   mcs.msg.yahoo.com:5050
   This address could be wrong.
But pressing the "Reset" button does not give me a new IP+port.
4. I created three accounts in Miranda: Yahoo, gmail and hotmail.
Only the Yahoo account is problematic (others work fine).
5. The wiki page for Yahoo protocol does not provide detailed steps.
(wiki pages for Google Talk and MSN are more detailed.)
6. Miranda is allowed to communicate through my firewall.
The "Private network" checkbox is selected.
The "public network" checkbox is DEselected.

It would be good if you could test this with Miranda 0.9 which is likely to be
the next stable release and please attach a network log of failed attempt to
connect.

I will try as soon as 0.9 is available (Is a beta is available for such
purposes?)

****
It appears that the Yahoo problem is not limited to Miranda alone: even Pidgin
also has the exact same problem.

I am sorry I could not find the default Yahoo settings in Pidgin; so I cannot
reproduce them here for comparison with Miranda.

As mentioned in the original bug report, I am able to go directly to my Yahoo
Groups and Yahoo mail from the same PC (I do not have to enter the
username+password, as I have selected the "keep me logged in for a fortnight"
facility offered by the Yahoo site.).

Does this provide any clue? For example, does the Yahoo website prevent the IM
clients from logging in because I am already logged in using Firefox?

(I have this doubt because I have seen a similar behavior in Hotmail: If you
log in Hotmail from another PC, then the first session at the first PC is
terminated immediately. But I keep logged in Yahoo from two different PCs at
the same time. So I know Yahoo is a little different; but I don't know for sure
how it behaves when FF and IM clients log in together.)

Yahoo login error - Miranda is blocked by the firewall. Unblock it.

And now your problem:

> 1. My PC is on a office LAN; located behind a firewall (Squid).
> There is no proxy.

Squid - is the http proxy not a firewall.... Most likely you need to configure
Miranda to go through it.

Closing this report as not a Miranda problem but user mistake.

Sorry my earlier feedback had an error: There is no Squid. We do have a
proprietary firewall (FortiGate), which is set to allow all IM messages (ICQ,
MSN, Yahoo, etc.).

I just installed Yahoo IM, and it worked "out of the box" without asking for any optional settings whatsoever. I checked the preferences of YIM, and it actually says "no proxy".

I do not think setting is a problem.

Now since this was a web-installer, it might have sensed my IP and set the
login server automatically. It might have also set some other options
specifically for the Yahoo network. Miranda should mimic those settings.

Ok, we do not have a problem connecting you do. So if you insist YIM (not a web
messenger, stand alone application) connects then get a Wireshark and record
how.

I actually have the same problem and I am in a office lan however the yahoo
protocol did work at one point until a miranda upgrade and now it is broken.
Yahoo messenger standalone works fine. This must be a protocol change or
something.

connection-at-any-protocol/page4

seems like a similar issue???
I can't log on to "MSN" when at school but can when I'm at home. (Public
firewall is unblocked but Miranda still finds a blockage)
