KML files with polygons significantly degrade performance in latest release of GE #274

Open GoogleCodeExporter opened 8 years ago

GoogleCodeExporter commented 8 years ago
Which products are affected?

5.0.11733.9347

What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. Open up a KML with complex polygons in previous version of GE.
2. Note performance of GE
3. Open up the same KML file in 5.0.11733.9347
4. Note that GE performance is degraded significantly compared to prior
version.

What is the expected output or behavior? What do you see instead?

Performance should be much better.

What application versions (if any) are you using?

Which operating systems and browsers are affected?

Windows XP

Please provide any additional information (code snippets/links) below.

Here is good example. Simple polygon KML file that is barely usable in
5.0.11733.9347

Hi,

Can you provide some details about your computer specifications (CPU, graphics
card,
etc.) On my local version of Windows XP, Google Earth runs just fine when
browsing
that file.

I have Pentium 4 with GeForce 7600 GS (512 MB Video Memory) and 1 Gig of system
RAM.
Windows XP with SP3 and all updates.

Try this file.

http://www.gelib.com/maps/_NL/world-borders.kml

Its nice and smooth when I'm zoomed in fairly close to the earth. But as I
zoom out
and the entire globe comes into view, the frame rate drops instantly from ~50
fps to
about 5 fps and becomes very choppy. I have all other layers turned off. It
becomes
much worse if Terrain, Roads, and Borders are enabled.

Hard for me to go back and compare to prior version of GE, but I see this issue
with
lots of KMLs lately, and never noticed it before.

Almost like video memory is the issue, but I would expect 512 megs to be plenty.

Thanks for looking into.

Sorry, forgot to mention. It's 3 GHZ pentium 4. Also, Video Card is AGP 8X and
DirectX9.0C.
