In previous communiques Markus alluded to R packages that compress pdf 
files. This is needed because current file sizes and load times are 
ridiculous for large-sample histograms.

A simple script and RFortran wrappa for doing this is needed quite 
urgently given the series of BATEA experiments planned.

Guillaume came up with a better solution to this - use hist2d instead of 
smoothScatter.
